Who will be Pro D2 champion this season? This is the question that torments the followers of the competition, as only two teams remain in the race. Perpignan and Biarritz will battle for the title on Saturday June 5, during the final, in Montpellier. It was the Catalans who qualified first, defeating Oyonnax, after a game in which USAP was superior (27-15). Later in the afternoon, it was the Biarrots' turn to pick up their ticket to the final, after knocking down Vannes in a thrilling match (34-33).

Perpignan between talent and experience

First and third at the end of the regular season, Perpignan and Biarritz surely have the two best squads in the championship. This season, several players stood out and established themselves among the best in the Pro D2. On the USAP side, of course, there is Melvyn Jaminet, fourth director of the season, who splashes matches with his talent, at only 21 years old. Against Oyonnax in the semi-finals, the full-back was the player of the match, breaking through the defense on several occasions and perpetually bringing danger.

At his side, there are also class players, already recognized for their talent, and who have already trod the lawns of the Top 14. Among them, captain Mathieu Acébès, at the club since 2016 and who has had a very good season in as a second center. His partner in the attacking line, Jeronimo De La Fuente, also has a lot of experience with the Jaguares in Super Rugby.

Regarding the experience, we can obviously talk about Damien Chouly, Ben Volavola, George Tisley or Piula Faasalele, all of whom have passed through the first echelon of French rugby. But Biarritz also has several players familiar with the very high level.

Biarritz in full euphoria

Starting with the captain and number 8, Steffon Armitage. The Englishman has known everything with Toulon and is pulling this Basque group to the top. Especially since he is associated on the third row with former Munster player Dave O’Callaghan. The pack is also guided by another former Irish provincial, James Hart. In the attack line, the BO can also count on Francis Saili, one of the best players in the championship. The New Zealander is decisive and is often used to reassure his teammates.

Another player who takes his responsibilities: the unexpected Romain Lonca. Recovering from injury at the end of the season, he put on a series of great performances and was also the source of Stark's test, which gave Biarrot success against Vannes in the semi-final. Because to get to the final, the Biarrots created the feat of winning over La Rabine, after having been behind throughout the second half. In the winning try, two men mainly stood out: Lucas Peyresblanques and Bernabé Couilloud, both of whom came into play during the match.

These luxury replacements perfectly embody the young, determined and daring Biarritz guard. Before combining on the winning try, they had been the scorers for the previous two tries, which left their team in the game. Impressive when you consider that they had already gone to lady in the play-off against Grenoble. Finally, the player who most symbolizes the form of Biarritz before the final is none other than Gavin Stark, who scored a hat-trick against Grenoble and was therefore on a liberating try in the semi-final.

Bitter confrontations during the season

Both Biarrots and Perpignan should therefore expect a constant fight next Saturday. Combat, the word is aptly chosen when looking back at the two face-offs of the season. BO-USAP was the poster boy for the first day, won 21-12 by the Basques in Aguiléra. Even if the Catalan team which had moved hardly resembles the one which won in the semi-final against Oyonnax, it is worth noting the victory of BO. A success in the first half, despite a reaction from USAP in the second act.

Perpignan finally got its revenge a few months later on Matchday 26. 29-27. Against an eye-catching Basque side, Perpignan came off 29-27, coming back again in the second half, after falling 9-18 at halftime. In this match, a man allowed the Catalans to stay in touch: Melvyn Jaminet, in full swing. In these two games, we can also report a rain of cardboard: seven yellows in total, including five inflicted on the USAP. In the final, Patrick Arlettaz's men will have to be much more disciplined. In any case, this final promises between two teams who have the level to play in the Top 14.
