The Colorado Avalanche and Florida Panthers of the NHL will be inactive until after Christmas, due to COVID-19. The Avs had four games scheduled before the league break, while the Panthers had three, but all of these games have joined a streak of postponements in the league.
The Calgary Flames already had four games postponed, while the Boston Bruins' match against the Canadiens in Montreal has been postponed since Saturday.
Boston had six players on the league's coronavirus protocol as of Friday morning. Goalkeeper Jeremy Swayman and forwards Anton Blidh and Trent Frederic were put into protocol last Thursday, after forwards Patrice Bergeron, Brad Marchand and Craig Smith were sidelined earlier in the week.
The Canadiens won 3-2 on a penalty shoot-out against the Philadelphia Flyers on Thursday at their home stadium, the Bell Center, where the match was played without fans at the request of Quebec public health authorities concerned about the growing number of COVID-19 cases.
"Today was a wake-up call," Canadiens forward Jonathan Drouin said Thursday. "We did not expect that this year there would not be fans in the stands with the vaccines. We had been told otherwise, but it is difficult to play again without the energy of the fans. But, health and safety are more important than going to see a hockey game".
The Flames added forward Mikael Backlund and a member of their COVID-19 protocol support staff, adding up to 19 players, three coaches and nine support staff.
